It's the first ever BOOKCLUB episode of With the Call! Terry is joined by unreal poet Halee Kirkwood to discuss The Resisters by Gish Jen, which Halee pitched to Terry as "The Sandlot meets The Handmaid's Tale," which is the greatest pitch in the history of literature. Halee also reads their brilliant poem from the Under Review Issue 1, 'I Share a Birthday with Tanya Harding,' and Terry continues the baseball theme by reading the classic poem 'Casey at the Bat' by Ernest Lawrence Thayer.

Halee Kirkwood is a 2019-2020 Loft Mentor Series Fellow and earned an MFA from Hamline University. Their work has been published or is forthcoming in Poem-A-Day, Water~Stone Review, Muzzle Magazine, Up The Staircase Quarterly, Cream City Review, and others. Kirkwood was a 2019 Teaching Artist Fellow at the Desert Nights, Rising Stars writing conference at Arizona State University, and is a teaching artist with The Loft Literary Center. A descendant of the Fond Du Lac Band of Lake Superior Ojibwe, Kirkwood is proud to call the western Great Lakes region home. Kirkwood is a bookseller at Birchbark Books and Native Arts.
